The large "doorplate" on the wall in the lobby of the our Hotel. The "台中崇德商業大樓" ("Taichung Chongde Twin
Tower"noteThe English on the doorplate. The actual word
"Twin" is not there in Chinese. Instead "商業" means "commercial", so "Taichung Chongde Commercial Tower" would
be more correct. The 中科 Hotel is just one business in the 崇德 (because it's located on 崇德路) commercial
building.
) is much more than just a hotel.
This little sign sits on the counter alongside the track
in the 養素庭火鍋 vegetarian 火鍋 (hot pot) restaurant where we ate with Meihui one day. It reads, "本餐廳用餐限時90分鐘
造成您的不便,請見諒" which translates to "Friendly Reminder: Dining time at this restaurant is limited to 90 minutes.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause." However, Meihui says they really don't care, especially for
their regular customers like her. (We stayed quite a while, the two sisters reminiscing, but I don't think it
was more than 90 minutes.)
All over Taichung you can find these tiles embedded in the sidewalk. This one appears relatively new (on a newer
sidewalk). I remember seeing them in the older parts of town many, many years ago when I was stationed here
in the Air Force.
Just outside the main entrance of the Zhong Ke Hotel, this planter serves as an ashtray. There is, of course, no
smoking in the hotel, so smokers, either by themselves or in groups, hang out around it to dump their butts
(and occasionally other trash).
A close up of the head of the Great Buddha on 八卦山 in 彰化 (Changhua).
Mei-O and I have been coming here for over 50 years, since before we were married. I guess I never noticed the
lightning rod on the top of the head.
"探訪高美鷺鷥展翅" (Visiting Gaomei egrets in flight) on a sign at the 溼地野生動物保護區 (Gaomei Wetland Preservation Area).
The smaller text reads "遨翔天際的白鷺鷥幻化為高美解說半島內的庭園景觀您發現牠展翅高飛的英姿了嗎? 歡迎您前來探索高美濕地的繽紛生命" (The egrets
soaring through the skies become the narrators of the garden landscape within the Gaomei Peninsula. Did you spot
their majestic flight? Welcome to explore the vibrant life of the Gaomei Wetlands.) We didn't see any egrets other
than these fake ones on display.
The 捷運 (MRT) stations in Taichung are massive overhead structures of concrete and steel.
The Thai Town Restaurant where Zhiwei took us one day has these robot waiters that scurry around the
restaurant (0:07) doing, well, actually not much. I tried to get a better video of one, but they always just
motored by us. I never saw one at a table taking an order, delivering food to a table, or bussing a
tablenoteI suppose as it went by in my short video,
it could've been transporting a load of dirty dishes loaded into it by a busboy from some table across the
restaurant back to the kitchen....
. But they were pretty cute.
